Tradition and the Individual Talent - T.S. Eliot

  • Eliot was extremely well read.  He was a literature generalist.

  • Leavisites liked Romantic poetry.

  • Eliot worked in modernist realm.

  • Modern art is conscience different.

  • Metaphysical poetry was hard to figure out.

  • Romantics would say you don't have to look at past.

  • In as much a poet is aware

  • 'criticism is as inevitable as breathing' (33).
